Monthly Newsletter of April, 2014.
(Issue # 168)

Dear members of the mystical Body of Christ,

As you are all aware, April 27, 2014 will go down in history because of its unique events. On that date, retired Pontiff Benedict XVI helped Pope Francis with the celebration of the ceremony that elevated Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII to Sainthood.

The elevation of Pope John Paul II to Sainthood has drawn international criticism. There are many who accused him of covering up the sex scandals that took place throughout the Catholic Church. They were present at the aforementioned ceremony to protest against this event.

In their protest, they make reference to the serial abuser Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado who was a good friend of Pope John Paul II. Fr. Maciel, a Mexican-born priest, founded the Legionaries of Christ, a Catholic religious order. Pope John Paul II constantly praised him for his work in recruiting priests for the church. In the late 1990's, Fr. Maciel was being investigated regarding alleged sexual abuse of seminarians and young people around the world. Naturally, Fr. Maciel aggressively denied everything.

Father Maciel was never publicly punished until 2006, after the death of Pope John Paul II. It was Pope Benedict XVI who ordered the priest to a life of penance.

After the death of Fr. Maciel in 2008, it became public knowledge that he had fathered children by at least two women, one living in Mexico, the other in Spain. The extent of his sexual abuse of minors included his own children.

Some victims of sexual abuse believe that the Vatican's fast-track of the canonization process is to silence their voices. The Vatican admits that the procedure is unusual, indicating that saint-making is “not exactly a democratic process.”

There are many who believe that if a person is to be elevated to Sainthood, his life must be impeccable. They indicate that no one can make that claim to the life of Pope John Paul II. By elevating Pope John Paul II to Sainthood, it brought into question the elevation of every Saint since the beginning of the Church. Were they really holy as the Church claimed throughout history or were we being deceived by fabricated stories of holiness?

Let us pray that we can put behind us this time in history that has divided many of the faithful. In many cases, some have lost their faith and left the Church. May the Holy Spirit heal the wounds of the Church in order to bring peace to the people.
