Dear children of God's Church,

During this past month, I had the opportunity of meeting individuals who were reaching out for friends. Each, for whatever reason, were living a life of loneliness. Some were seniors, rejected by society because of their age. Others had just moved into the big city and did not know where to start to make friends. Some, their children had moved away. Others had recently experienced a separation.

These individuals were not recently released prisoners. They were not the murderers and the rapists that society normally rejects. They were just individuals like you and I who found themselves in lonely circumstances.

For many of them, especially the elderly, they will never get out of their situation because the people of North America now lives in a society that doesn't care about their neighbours, never mind the elderly.

Many of the practicing Catholics go to Church every Sunday, shake the hand of those around them during Mass and give the impression that they are caring people. But where are these Catholics when the lonely are crying out for company, for friendship, for someone to talk to?

Have we forgotten the words of Jesus when He said, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ [Mt. 25:40] ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ [Mt. 25:45]

You may not want to visit the prisoners or the sick in the hospital. But what is wrong with going to visit a lonely person once a week for an hour? You may be the only person who will ever bring a smile to the face of the abandonned. This week, think about it!

If that person smiles, Jesus is smiling.

May the Holy Spirit guide you according to the needs of the Church on earth.
