A. 1. According to the Holy Bible, the word "holocaust" is a reference to the Jewish sacrificial offerings that consisted of a slaughtered animal or other offering that was completely burned on an altar.

The word "holocaust" has a Greek origin whereas "holos" means "whole" and "kaustos" means "burnt." The word represents a whole offering that is consumed by fire.
