Frequently Asked Questions
regarding
THE BIBLICAL ORIGIN OF
THE SACRAMENT OF CONFESSION.

Q. 1. Where can I find information in the Bible regarding Catholics being required to confess to a priest?

A. 1. Nowhere in the Holy Bible does it say that Catholics must confess their sins to a priest. This practice is based on a number of factors:

First of all, in Matthew 9:6, Jesus said, "So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”

Secondly, in Matthew 16:19, Jesus gave Peter the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Having said that, Jesus would not have granted the authority to forgive sins if there had been no need to do so.
