Frequently Asked Questions

Q. 1. Have most of the Popes originated from Italy? It seems that all the Pope during the past thousands years were Italians.

A. 1. Our present Pope Francis was from South America. Pope Benedict XVI was from Germany. Pope John-Paul II was from Poland. These last three Popes have broken the tradition of electing and Italian Pope.

In the early days of the Catholic Church, three Popes came from North Africa. There was Pope Victor I from AD 186 to 198, Pope Melchiades (or Miltiades) from AD 311 to 314 and Pope Gelasius I from AD 492 to 496.

Hopefully the new trend will see future Popes from new countries in places like Asia, North America and Europe.
