Frequently Asked Questions
regarding
GIVING AWAY THE BRIDE
AT A CATHOLIC MARRIAGE.

Q. 1. Who gives away the bride at a Catholic wedding if the father has passed away?

A. 1. You may be surprised to hear this, but Catholics fathers do not give away the bride (daughters) in marriage. Catholics believe that the man and woman give themselves to each other in marriage.

To give away the bride implies that there is a lack of freedom on the part of the bride to enter into the Sacrament of Marriage. It implies that the father or whoever gives her away, is implementing an arranged marriage, contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Such would invalidate a Marriage, giving grounds for an Annulment.

For the above reason, you will never hear the words "who gives this woman to this man?" in the Catholic marriage liturgy. Consequently, Catholics are urged to not participate in any ceremony that involves the "giving away of the bride" on the basis of religious principles.
