Q. 1. Why does the Bishop anoint the candidate on the forehead when he confirms him/her?
A. 1. The anointing of the forehead with chrism in the form of a cross signifies that the Catholic who is confirmed must always be ready to confess his faith openly and to practice it fearlessly.
Number 1285 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church affirm this: "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed."
