Q. 1. Is it appropriate for Catholics to wear a Rosary around their neck?
A. 1. Those who do so, do it for one of two reasons. Either it is worn for a devotional reason or as a fashion accessory. Both reasons for wearing a Rosary around one's neck are inappropriate.
On the subject of devotions, Jesus said, "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." [Matthew 6:6] Therefore, why do some Catholics find it necessary to advertise that they pray the Rosary by wearing it around their necks? Their prayers are meaningless for they are full of pride. There is a place and a time for everything. Wearing a Rosary in public around one's neck is not the right place and time.
Because the Rosary is a Marian Sacramental, it is not appropriate for anyone, Catholic or not, to wear it as a fashion accessory. Respect must be shown towards the Marian Sacramentals that were not intended to be worn as bodily decorations.
