Q. 1. Why is the Catholic Church placing so much emphasi of feeding the poor? It is a lost battle. Jesus did say that "There will always be poor people." [Mt. 26:11; Mk. 14:7; Jn. 12:8]
A. 1. "While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”"
Following this, Jesus said, "There will always be poor people." Jesus was not saying that the poor should not be fed. Jesus was telling them, yes, you will always have poor people among you as long as the world last, but, my Divine Presence shall come to an end. I will be departing from this world.
Throughout the Holy Bible, there are verses that command us to feed the poor.
"The poor shall never cease out of the land; therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy in thy land." [Deut. 15:11].
"If you give some of your own food to [feed] those who are hungry and to satisfy [the needs of] those who are humble, then your light will rise in the dark, and your darkness will become as bright as the noonday sun."[Is. 58:10]
"Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help."[Is. 58:7]
"He is a merciful creditor, not keeping the items given as security by poor debtors. He does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy."[Ezek. 18:7]
"He answered them, “Whoever has two shirts should share with the person who doesn’t have any. Whoever has food should share it too.”"[Lk. 3:11]
"I tell all of you with certainty, whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple will never lose his reward.”[Mt. 10:42]
"The one who is gracious to the poor lends to the Lord, and the Lord will repay him for his good deed."[Prov. 19:17]
"A generous person will be blessed, for he gives some of his food to the poor." [Prov. 22:9]
To reaffirm the Lord's command to feed the poor, I quote this passage from Jesus:
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’" [Mt. 25:35, 40]
